The following specialists provide support services to students at the Children’s Center for Communication/Beverly School for the Deaf (CCC/BSD):
Speech and Language Therapists - Our Speech and Language Team possess Certification of Clinical Competence in Speech Language Pathology (CCC-SLP) and knowledge in Augmentative-Alternative Communication (AAC). They possess specialized knowledge in deafness, amplification, and cochlear implant technology, as well as ASL communication skills. They provide language, speech, audition, and functional communication skill development services to students one-on-one and in small groups, as well as direct consult to faculty. Physical Therapist - Our Physical Therapy Team works with children who have physical disabilities that impede their ability to fully participate in the school day. Students needs vary and as such, PT differs for each child. Physical therapy sometimes occurs in the therapy room using a variety of therapeutic equipment to help stretch tight muscles, strengthen weak muscles, facilitate balance and coordination, and practice other gross motor skills. During physical therapy some children practice developmental skills such as rolling over, kneeling, and walking using a walker, crutches, or a cane for assistance. At other times therapy occurs outside the classroom as students learn to walk up and down stairs, increase independence by propelling a manual or power wheelchair, and safely transfer from one position to another. Our PT also works with school staff to teach body mechanics, safe lifting and transferring techniques to keep both staff and students safe.
Occupational Therapist - Our OT Team specializes in pediatric and sensory integration treatment. The OT has professional certification from Sensory Integration International and is certified to administer the Sensory Integration and Praxis Test (SIPT). Occupational therapy services are given to improve sensory processing, visual perceptual/visual motor skills, fine motor skills, vocational, and self-care skills such as dressing and feeding. Our OT Team consults with teachers to suggest modifications and accommodations to enable students to function to the best of their ability in the school environment.
School Psychologist - Our school Psychologist is nationally certified, licensed, and skilled in ASL. Her primary goal is to help children and youth succeed academically, socially, and emotionally. To this end, she strengthens connections between home and school to create safe, healthy, and supportive learning environments for all students. The Psychologist evaluates students to best understand individual strengths and weaknesses, assess academic skills and aptitude for learning, determine social-emotional development and mental health status, evaluate eligibility for special services, and evaluate learning environments. Her services are available to all students, families, and classrooms in the areas of consultation, assessment, and counseling.
School Behavior Analyst - The CCC/BSD Board Certified Behavior Analyst provides individual and group treatment for students identified as having behavioral development needs. Treatment sessions may be one-on-one or small group within the classroom. Our Behavior Analyst functions as part of a multi-disciplinary team with educational focus across all IEP goals. She consults with faculty in order to recommend activities, model appropriate programs, review behavioral/psychological development, and maintain data of student progress toward goals and objective targets. With effective application of behavioral principles, she strives to provide a creative and active learning setting for all students and encourage their healthy growth.
School Nurse - Our School Nurse (RN) works collaboratively with our LPN and, as needed, individual private duty nurses, and is available during school hours. On a daily scheduled basis she distributes medication and administers feeding procedures. She cares for sick and injured students and staff as needed and is available to provide emergency medical care. In addition, she maintains health records; recommends and implements school policies to comply with established health laws such as immunization requirements and communicable disease procedures; and provides in-service education for school personnel to ensure that staff is current on health and safety issues regarding blood borne pathogens, epi-pen training, emergency care procedures, and other appropriate health issues.
Curriculum Coordinator -The Curriculum Coordinator supervises the curriculum taught at CCC/BSD. She helps teachers determine curriculum goals and obtain required curriculum materials. She supervises teachers to be sure that they are implementing the appropriate Massachusetts Curriculum Framework goals, based on the individual needs and IEP of each student. She also oversees student MCAS preparation and testing, and submission of MCAS portfolios.
Library and Media Specialist - The library and media specialist helps classroom teachers find books and other media materials related to the curriculum areas they are teaching. She is responsible for maintaining the adult and student libraries at CCC/BSD.
